The Baori
Dubai Design Week
Coded lines Collective:
The Coded Lines Collective was formed as a collaborative effort of three design studios coming together to explore and expand realms of architectural research, materiality, and tactility as we know it. The Company of Design from Surat, Anuvad Innovation Studio from Ahmedabad, and When a line from Mumbai form this newly founded collective and aim to look at developing new parallels, starting with an interactive terracotta installation called 'Baori'. A traveling exhibit, starting from the Dubai Design Week, this installation will also be showcased in parts of India, including at the Conscious Collective 2024.
The collective, led by the founders of respective companies Pooja, Niel, Chhail, and Sahil, aims to bring forth design as a cohesive experience of the physical and the sensorial through material, research, and technology.
Baori :
The installation revisits the vernacular using terracotta combined with proprietary sensor tech to create an immersive and interactive installation. The proposed installation 'Baori' gains its design inspiration from the stepwells found across the Indian region. Engaging traditional artisanship along with contextualized technology, the Baori is intended to initiate dialogues around holistic conservation and in turn, a holistic take on the term 'vernacular', not just through forms and materiality, but also stories through craft, motifs and soundscapes.
The Experience:
With ‘tac-tiles’ curated throughout the installation, these touch responsive tiles trigger a euphony of sounds ranging from the sounds of water to various regional instruments, such as the string instrument ‘Sarod’ to an ancient clay percussion instrument ‘Ghatam’, to name a few. Thus, bringing forth a cohesive experience of the physical and sensorial.
